Jack is finally starting to get it. Since my last post, he has figured out that "more" means "more." When he was six months old, Tom and I thought we would try to teach him baby signs. The three that "they" tell you to start with are "milk," "eat," and "more." Jack learned "milk" pretty quickly (and still makes this sign or some variation thereof a little more often than I would like). We only managed to teach him "eat" after he learned to say it. But we really messed up with "more." We would feed him and make the sign, "More?" to see if he wanted anything else to eat. Usually he didn't. So we would go "More? No? Okay, no more." And so consequently Jack learned that the "more" sign meant "no more." He would invariably sign "more" when he was finished eating or if he wanted us to cease and desist a certain action (for example, changing his diaper). As he started talking, he would both say and sign "more" but still mean "no more."
But he recently learned "all done!" and now he no longer needs "more/no more." And just yesterday he figured out the utility of "more" when he actually wants more of something. Now we're really in for it.
Also, an explanatory note about the last post. Jack no longer calls me "Annie." This is now his word for "airplane." He still doesn't call me "mommy" or "mama." To him, I am "nanny." I tell him that I don't get paid to watch him, but he still insists that "nanny" is my name. But he saw a dog at the park the other day, and he called her "mama." I'm really starting to wonder what Tom is telling him about me.
