The gods hate hubris

It seems there's a fine line between hubris and optimism. In an attempt to stay positive, I posted yesterday that we had had a good week, knowing that yesterday was already on its way to being pretty challenging. Boy, was it ever.

Yesterday morning, we went to a play date in Spring Valley. For those of you who are not up on your San Diego geography, that's pretty far east. We left the play date early to try to make our swim class at noon. Of course, Jack fell asleep in the car. But since it was only for about 15-20 minutes, I figured I could wake him, do the swim class, and then have him take a nap afterward.

Hmm.

Well, of course, after swim class, Jack did NOT want to take a nap. He wanted to just nurse and play, nurse and play (and really, I hardly think he sees much of a distinction between the two at this point). Finally at 3:55 PM, I was worn out. I told him I was going to put him in his crib. If he slept, fine, but if not, he just needed some quiet time.

You can guess how that went.

He screamed bloody murder for 15 minutes and then fell asleep. At 4:30 PM, he woke up, and he was PISSED. I got him up, and he just kept crying and screaming. I brought him into our room and tried to nurse him again, and he kept crying and fussing. Finally, he fell back asleep. And then proceeded to sleep until 7:15 PM.

UGH.

Needless to say, he didn't go to bed until late that night. Like almost 11 PM. I swear, I feel like it won't be long before we are candidates for Super Nanny.

Today was a lot better. Jack woke up at 7:20 AM (late for him). We went to the park. He fell asleep in the car about one minute before we got home, but then completely woke up when I tried to put him down for his nap. He was clearly tired but fighting the nap. At 1:45 PM, I decided if I needed to make him cry it out, we might as well do it earlier than later to avoid yesterday's debacle. I put him in his crib, explaining to him what was going to happen. All the time, he was yelling, "No! No!" He screamed and screamed for 10 minutes and then, at last, the sleep gods took pity on me, and he fell asleep and napped until 4:30 PM.

Thank you, thank you, sleep gods! Your gift will be cherished, and I will never take your generosity for granted. Only tell me what offerings I can make to please and properly honor you, and I swear I will give them with a glad and open heart.
