We are so not ready

...to potty train!

Over the last couple of months, it's been pretty clear when Jack has to go poop. He'll tell us, "Bye-bye, Mommy (or Daddy)! No Mommy (or Daddy)!" Sometimes, he'll wander off to a spot where we can't see him. (His current favorite spot is behind our coffee table.) Other times, he'll start saying, "Owie! Tummy owie!"

You get the idea.

Anyway, it's obvious to us when something is about to happen down there. So lately we've been asking him if he wants to sit on his potty seat. He usually says yes, and off we go.

Today was a perfect example of what usually transpires after that:

Jack sat on his potty, and then proceeded to talk about Elmo and Big Bird being on his potty seat. Then he started squirming and bouncing up and down. Then he started inspecting the family jewels. The only reason he wasn't unrolling the toilet paper roll, crumpling up the paper, and dumping it in the toilet bowl is because we've learned our lesson and keep the roll out of his reach. I asked him if he wanted some privacy; he said no. After several minutes of just messing around, he finally stood up on the step stool in front of the toilet. There was, of course, no poop in the potty. There was, however, a warm yellow puddle on the floor. *sigh*

He asked to wash his hands. While he was splashing around the sink, I wrangled him into a diaper. I did not even try to get his pants back on. He kept splashing the water and pouring more and more soap on his hands. I told him, "That's enough."

"No 'that's enough'!" he yelled. "No! No!"

Not feeling like fighting about that at that precise moment, I went to the kitchen to get some paper towels for the puddle. I came back, and there was roughly a third of a bottle of liquid soap squirted all over the counter and water everywhere. The front of his shirt was sopping wet, and as I walked in, he was trying to drink the soapy water ("Don't like it!" was his considered opinion). I got him, the counter, and the floor cleaned up, and we finally left the bathroom.

About half an hour after this adventure, he pooped in his diaper.

Once again, it became apparent that he was about to do so, because he told me, "No Mommy!"

And then he said, "No poop on potty! No sit on potty!"

Don't worry, buddy. I won't be asking you to do that again for a loooong time.

I felt like I tried everything to convince Kaylee to use the potty, and then one day she found out Allie was potty trained, and that was that. Just hang in there, he will get it. I would try to not ask for a while as well and maybe when you are out with kids that are potty trained, and you see them going, point it out to Jack so he starts to see other kids are doing it!
You know some good old peer pressure!

Very funny post--well, at least to me. I wish we were ready. I ask Kingsley all the time if he wants to use the potty. "No, no potty" is always the answer. He always wants Teddy (bear) to use the potty instead and he always wants to help us flush (I guess that's a start?). E for effort Jack, E for effort. The day will come, I know it.

I think Colleen is onto something...

Kelly, once Kingsley is potty trained, we'll have to arrange a visit, so I can tell Jack, "See? Kingsley uses the potty!"

In our house, we like to hide under the dining room table to do our "business."
