One week update

We've completed our first full week of potty-training, and I just wanted to give a quick update. At the risk of jinxing anything, it is going surprisingly well. Jack hasn't had an accident in three days! KNOCK WOOD!

One thing that's a little nerve-wracking for me is that he doesn't reliably volunteer when he needs to go. He can hold it for a long time - a lot longer, in fact, than I can. But after a couple of hours, I start getting nervous that he's going to have an accident. He's also not great at saying, yes, he does need to go if I ask him. It usually takes an incentive (i.e., bribe) to get him to try to use the potty after enough time has passed.

The major challenge we've encountered is that he doesn't like the traditional underpants. He will wear boxer briefs if we call them shorts. He refuses to put on anything that he suspects is actually underwear. And then he often refuses to put on regular pants, because why should he? he's wearing shorts. Getting dressed takes a lot longer these days.

He mostly uses his little potty seat, but he will use the toilet if it's not available. I had really hoped that I could forgo the potty altogether, but it is a lot easier for him to use. And I plan to take a page from some of my mom friends and keep one in the car in case of emergency.

We're nowhere close to giving up diapers at night. He still wakes up wet in the morning, sometimes soaked. But I'm so glad to be done with daytime diapers.

So that's what we've been doing the past week. My little boy is growing up. It's strange how some milestones announce themselves with great fanfare, and others just go by without you realizing it. I don't remember the last time I changed a dirty diaper; I certainly didn't do it thinking that it would be the last one. How many milestones will slip by in the same way? How many days, weeks, months will pass before I realize that the last time Jack sat on my lap, let me see him naked, called me "Mommy" instead of "Mom," asked me to kiss an owie, or pronounced the letter "l" like a "y" or "w" really was the last time? It's making me preemptively nostalgic for a time that's still here.

But I really am glad to be done with daytime diapers. :)

And, I totally concur with your last sentiments. Very well-put. Wishing you both continued success!
