Achtung, Mommy!

Violet is 5 1/2 weeks old. It's so much fun to see how much she changes from week to week. She is starting to pay more attention to the world around her. A few days ago, I noticed her really watching the little toys that we hung on her car seat. She'll stare at whomever is holding her for minutes on end and make lots of faces, including some smiles, at us.

She's also starting to demand that we pay attention to her. Gone are the days when I could set her down to quickly attend to something for Jack or - heaven forbid - myself. She understands right away when she's being put on a back burner, and she does not approve.

The pacifier is alternately a source of comfort and frustration for her. Her favorite pacifier is me, and she realizes that being given the binky is a way of trying to shush her with a minimum amount of effort and attention on our part, which... see above. When she takes the binky, it's great, but sometimes it requires a bit of persistence. If she's not feeling it, her facial expressions range from insulted to disgusted to positively aggrieved that we would even think she would accept such an inferior method of appeasement. The worst is when she gags while we try to put it in her mouth.

She, thankfully, continues to be a good sleeper, but it can be difficult to get her to nap anywhere other than my arms. She still has the startle reflex, and she will often wake herself up when her hands fly in her face. Being cocooned in her car seat or my arms tends to minimize it. I'd like to be able to wear her in a wrap or a sling so that I can at least have my hands free, but she doesn't really seem to enjoy it as much as I would like. I can't tell if the wrap is on too tight for her or she just can't get in a comfortable position. The other issue is that her face is planted squarely against my chest in those carriers. I don't know if it's that all the smells from her favorite snack bar is getting to her, but she just roots around like a little piglet digging for truffles when I try to wear her. It's probably just another protest against my attempt to not have to give her my undivided attention.

It should be interesting to see how I manage both attention hogs once Tom goes back to work.
