This morning, I had propped Violet up in a corner of the couch while I went to make myself some breakfast. Jack, as he normally is, was all up in her face and cooing and squealing at her. And then I heard him say, "I'm holding Baby!"
I turned around, and he had picked the baby up off the couch and was holding her in his arms. He was beaming from ear to ear. Immediately, two things flashed through my mind. The first was, "The last time he held her, he dropped her. " The second was, "That is so freaking cute, I wish I had my camera right now."
I resisted the urge to photographically record the moment for posterity and instead took her out of his arms.
"I didn't drop her!" Jack said proudly.
Not wanting to rain on his parade, I told him, "What a great big brother! But next time, ask Mommy before you pick her up."
He showed how good a listener he is by immediately going over to try to pick her up again. Without asking.
I read somewhere that it typically takes about three months for the novelty of a new baby to wear off and the sibling rivalry to begin in earnest. I'm really cherishing this time when all Jack wants to do is love on his little sister. Hopefully, these sweet memories will sustain me when the kids are bickering over toys or who gets to watch their show on TV.

Katie shoved a stick pretzel down Miles' throat when he was about 2 months old. I was throwing laundry in the washer.. she was trying to help as he was crying and thought he was hungry.. It took awhile for her to get used to him!
At least he's being sweet! :)
