I used to count myself lucky that Jack never really went through a potty talk phase. A lot of his friends did - and are still in it. Jack would occasionally test us and let slip a "poop" or "pee," but we quickly put the kibosh on that. He did go through a pretty intense "eyeball" phase, where everything was "eyeball" this or "eyeball" that. I think that was probably the grossest thing that we would let him get away with, so he said it constantly. It was annoying, but given the alternatives, not really that bad.
Fast forward to now. If I had any illusions that little girls would have more delicate sensibilities than little boys, Violet has made me sadder but wiser. It basically started with the Incident of the Camel Peeing. That garnered such a reaction from her brother that all she does is talk "poo-bum-willy," as my English friend calls it.
When we pick Jack up from school, it's not long after we get in the car that Violet starts spouting off, "Poo poo! Pee pee!"
Jack is no help. Despite his protestations ("No potty talk, Violet!"), he nearly always laughs.
Every now and then, Violet will talk about eating peas or peanuts. Whenever either word comes out of her mouth, she pauses and says, "That's not potty talk. That's just food."
One of several little games she and Jack play is talking gibberish to each other. "Goo goo ga ga" features pretty prominently in these "conversations." Sometimes Violet will say to me, "Goo goo ga ga! That's not potty talk. That's just nonsense."
Another really disgusting thing Violet has been doing is picking her nose and then wiping or threatening to wipe the, uh, fruits of her labor on Jack or his car seat. This upsets Jack to no end, but still, she gets the big reaction out of him. I keep telling him to just ignore her and she will stop, but he can't help himself.
And speaking of the camel, Violet will have me sing this song to her that goes,
"When cows get up in the morning, they always say good day;
When cows get up in the morning, they always say good day;
They say, 'Moo moo moo,'
That is what they say.
They say, 'Moo moo moo,'
That is what they say."
Then you go through various animals. Ducks say, "Quack quack quack;" cats say, "Meow Meow Meow;" and so on. Violet will often ask me to sing "camels," and of course for her, the camels say, "Pssssst psssst psssst."
