Jack started off the day complaining that he was cold. The two things that Jack will never admit to feeling are cold and tired. I immediately knew that there was something wrong. Sure enough, I took his temperature, and he had a fever. With chills, obviously. It was a big bummer, because we had such a fun day planned, including a dinner playdate that would have given Daddy a bit of a break. Ah well, the best-laid plans...
Most of the day was spent on the couch. After the last few weeks that we've had with Jack, I'm slightly ashamed to admit that having a lethargic little boy who didn't have the energy to make a bunch of noise or demands or arguments was a nice silver lining to the cloud of his being sick. The fact that he napped twice - and, for a few far-too-short but blissful minutes, at the same time as his sister - was an even brighter one.
Tom, ever the optimist, said, "Maybe he's been acting up lately because he was coming down with something."
I'll pretend I believe that.
Of course, Jack can't help being Jack. Even though he did fall asleep twice today, he did so very reluctantly and only because he was so wiped out from the fever. When, at one point, I asked him if he wanted to go upstairs to rest in his bed, he popped his eyes wide open and said, "But I already slept until 7:00!"
Cross your fingers that this passes quickly for us - and that no one else in the family gets it. We want to be able to get back to the serious business of playing with our friends.
