Our Thanksgiving started off with what I call a Thanksgiving miracle. For some unfathomable reason, Jack has gotten on to a really early wake-up schedule. He's woken up before 7:00 AM for the past week or so. But he still fights both naptime and bedtime tooth and nail, the result being that usually the only nap he gets is if he happens to fall asleep in the car. Knowing that we were going to go over to our friends' house for Thanksgiving dinner at 3:00, we tried keeping Jack up late the night before so that he would hopefully sleep in.
No such luck.
He woke up earlier than ever Thanksgiving morning and was ready to start the day. At around 10:30, though, Jack was running around the house as I was working on the computer. A few minutes later, I noticed it was strangely quiet. As moms all around the world know, a quiet toddler is rarely a good thing. I thought to myself, "Do I enjoy this silence, or do I go see what Jack is up to?" convinced that I was sure to happen upon, at the very least, a big mess. I gave it a couple of minutes and then went to investigate.
I popped my head into Jack's room. He wasn't there. I checked our bedroom. Nope. I went downstairs and looked in the kitchen. He wasn't anywhere. At that point, I started to get a little worried.
"Jack!" I called. No answer.
"Jack, where are you?" Still no answer. I was starting to freak out.
I charged through the house. "Jack! Answer me right now!" I almost screamed.
I opened the door to our guest bedroom. On the guest bed, I saw Jack sitting up, buried deep in the covers, with a frown and slightly groggy look on his face.
Are you kidding me? Did he actually crawl into bed by himself and fall asleep of his own volition for the first time ever in his life? And did I just wake him up???
Apparently so. But the Thanksgiving gods were smiling on us. I lay down beside Jack for a little bit, and he fell back asleep. And he stayed asleep for nearly three hours, long enough for us to get all our last-minute prep finished, and he woke up just in time for us to make Thanksgiving dinner.
A big thank you to the Alliegator family for taking us in for Thanksgiving, and our compliments to the chef and sous-chef. Our wonderful friends made what would have otherwise been a lonely holiday one that was full of great food, music, dancing, and lots of fun. I hope everyone had as nice a Thanksgiving as we did.
